Born in Japan. Live and work in Stroud and London.
Kaoru has her background in pedagogy, science and art. She is nature nerd – she is passionate about natural beauty & incredible ecosystem, as well as wild life conservation. She has her lifelong passion to connect youngsters and grown-ups to nature through science and art. As a day job, she has been developing learning programmes for families and schools at the Natural History Museum in London for 18 years.
Her art is humorous, low tech, manual, surreal, playful, friendly and sunny. Even for her latest audio-visual digital art, drawing, crafting, dance and acting are done manually/ physically first.
Materials. Her artwork often involves the fun process of exploring and experimenting natural materials such as clay , cotton, wool, copper and washi papers… and classic masking tapes!
Her favourite material has been always clay. This is probably due to her childhood spending time with her father making miniature models and also with her mother doing pottery work as her family hobby. She also worked with many inspirational craftspeople in Japan as part of the Japanese Art and Craft Association.
‘Party Animals in Stroud‘. It’s the playful side of her art, which was launched in 2016 at the SVA’s Winter Wonderland at the Brunel’s Goods Shed in Stroud. They made many people smile.
Performance art is the other interpretation & communication mechanism that Kaoru has been using to engage with people. She found this intangible, imparmanent and interactive art form very effective particularly to inspire people to explore the natural world and science of nature – through her work at the Natural History Museum and also with her local natural science and art group, Wild Things in Stroud.
In March 2019, Kaoru has teamed up with a singer-song-writer, performer and comedic Elvis impersonator, Joe Reeve to set up a nature inspired, multi-media science and art enterprise, DiscoNature. DiscoNature aims to connect people to the wild and to power people who stand out for nature – through laughter!
In July 2019, DiscoNature has launched their nature inspired audio-visual extravaganza which combines science, comedy, music, dance and games.
During the lockdown in April 2020, Kaoru and Joe have set up the DiscoNature’s YouTube channel. They have been making a range of short videos to entertain and inspire all ages especially families with young children to explore doorstep nature and discover fun in their everyday life.
There will be more stuff coming up soon in the future. Music, films, comedy podcast and alternative art programme & publications..
Kaoru has also been working on her own projects such as Art of Vulnerable Nature, which is a collection of art photography and audio-visual work to spotlight on animals on Red List, climate change and other wildlife conservation issues.
Her audio-visual videos and short films are often inspired by real life stories, yet surreal and trippy to take audience away from reality and give some space to reflect on things.
In September 2022, Kaoru has teamed up with a very talented Balearic & house DJ Mat Blythe, aka DJ Mat Balearic to set up audio-visual DJ, Keep It Cosmic, playing house, Balearic, disco, funk and soul.
